Did you know that it can take as long as 10 years to receive an accurate diagnosis of endometriosis? Many women experience pain, particularly pelvic pain, and are told that that’s just how it is. The truth is, it’s not. Endometriosis is one of the leading causes of pelvic pain we see here at Yinova. It can seriously affect one’s ability to conceive and can also cause uncomfortable, heavy, or irregular periods. Sometimes there are no symptoms associated with endometriosis and it is only discovered when a woman seeks treatment for infertility.
That’s why we decided to create an acupuncture program specifically for our patients who have been diagnosed with endometriosis or who suspect they might have it.
What is Endometriosis and how can Chinese medicine help?
Endometriosis is a condition where tissue that normally lines the uterus grows within the pelvic cavity. It can stick to the pelvic organs, including the ovaries, bowels, rectum, bladder, and the delicate tissue lining the abdominal cavity. In some cases, it can stray even further. Endometriosis is associated with heavy periods, cramping, spotting between periods, abdominal swelling, pain during intercourse, and sometimes gastrointestinal symptoms. It can also interfere with the ability to conceive.
Acupuncture, Chinese herbal medicine, and lifestyle changes can significantly improve symptoms associated with endometriosis and limit the proliferation of tissue. In fact, several studies have shown that acupuncture and herbs have had positive outcomes for complaints related to endometriosis and associated infertility.
The 12-Week Program
The inspiration for this program was actually a conversation between Yinova founder, Dr. Jill Blakeway, and a gynecological surgeon Dr. Elizabeth Poynor. Dr. Poynor had noticed that some of her patients required surgery as often as every two years to remove endometriosis tissue because it would grow back so quickly; out of those patients, she noticed that people who took a holistic approach in managing their condition tended to have slower rates of regrowth.
This 12-week program aims to provide patients with an integrative framework for long term management of their endometriosis, regardless of their surgical history.
During the 12 weeks, your practitioner will learn more about your specific case and establish a baseline to document the impacts of endometriosis on your daily life. You will receive individualized lifestyle suggestions, along with herbal medicine and supplement guidance based on your constitution. We’ll also give you a symptom journal for you to track your progress.
Our team of practitioners will work hand-in-hand with Dr. Poynor herself or your gynecologist or reproductive endocrinologist, as we find it most effective to combine Chinese medicine with medical treatments and hormonal therapies. This integrative approach will allow us to combine Chinese medicine with medical diagnostics and management to create a holistic, individualized plan for managing endometriosis. Patients who are actively trying to conceive are encouraged to participate as we will make adjustments to our recommendations that support pregnancy.
