For this month’s Yinova Book Club, we will be reading “The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down: A Hmong Child, Her American Doctors, and the Collision of Two Cultures” by Anne Fadiman.
This book explores a clash of cultures between a small hospital in California and a refugee family from Laos and how cultural misunderstandings impacted the care of Lia Lee, a Hmong child diagnosed with severe epilepsy, with tragic results.
Join us for a discussion led by Yinova founder Jill Blakeway about the impacts that cultural practices, spiritual beliefs, and race can have on medicine; as well as a broader look at the impact that cultural differences can have within a community.
Our book club always offers a lively discussion, so please feel free to join us, even if you weren’t able to read the book in time.
The discussion is free to attend – you can sign up here. Once you have RSVP’d, you will receive an email with information on how to access this discussion online.
