Women’s Health

Here at YinOva we are all about helping women be the healthiest they can be, at all ages and stages of life. Not every woman needs the exact same thing — and even the same woman needs different things at different times in her life. So Chinese medicine is the perfect approach, because it is always about the individual — and always about the whole person. Our YinOva Transitions program meets you wherever you are on your journey, to smooth the road beneath your feet, and prepare you to move forward with strength and calm.

Chinese medicine is an ideal approach for many childhood health concerns, because it is always gentle and safe — and because Western medicine doesn’t always have solutions for the ordinary woes of childhood, the sniffles and ear aches and such that keep parents and kids up at night and out of daily activities.

    PREPARING YOUR BODY FOR CONCEPTION

At YinOva we are committed to the idea that healthy bodies are more likely to have healthy babies. Just as a gardener enriches the soil before planting a seed, we believe in investing in your health and your body before you conceive. As you begin to think about starting a family, we encourage you to take three months to get in great shape. Come and see us to get advice on diet, help with dropping your unhealthy habits and an overall reproductive tune-up to get you in the best condition possible to conceive and grow a new life.

If you have been trying to conceive for a while without success, you may be feeling dispirited and discouraged. Here at the YinOva Center all of our practitioners are experienced when it comes to treating infertility. For some of our patients, Chinese medicine is all they need to conceive, while for others it makes more sense to combine Eastern medicine with the best Western medicine has to offer. Either way we’re here to support you.

Our three-month plan based on Jill’s book Making Babies begins with a full health history, which we use to create a personalized plan to increase your chances of conceiving. Depending on your personal needs, your regimen could include:

    • Acupuncture
    • Chinese herbs
    • An exercise plan
    • Adjustments to your diet
    • Lifestyle changes such as cutting down on caffeine
    • Learning to pinpoint when you ovulate
    • Eliminating or changing certain prescription or over-the-counter medications
    • Getting familiar with the quality of your cervical mucus
    • Identifying obstacles to conception

In our experience, many women find that a few months of monitoring, careful timing, regular acupuncture, personalized Chinese herbal formulas, and pro-fertility lifestyle choices are enough to do the trick, even if they’ve already had trouble conceiving. If not, we work with your gynecologist or reproductive endocrinologist, and help you through assisted reproductive techniques with supportive care and advice. Acupuncture, for example, has been proven to increase the success rate of IVF by fifty percent.

STAYING STRONG THROUGH PREGNANCY AND DELIVERY

Everyone at YinOva gets a lot of pleasure out of helping women conceive and then taking care of them during their pregnancy. Watching them grow and change never ceases to amaze, though it can be hard to stop and see for yourself during pregnancy just how miraculous you are. Sometimes, morning sickness, fatigue, back pain or swollen ankles obscure your vision on that point.  That’s why we designed a pregnancy program to complement the care you get from your obstetrician, offering natural solutions to the most common pregnancy ailments and helping you take control of your pregnancy

Using acupuncture we can address issues such as:

    • Morning sickness
    • Fatigue
    • Constipation
    • Headaches
    • Swollen ankles
    • Anxiety
    • Back pain
    • Heart burn
    • Not to mention our soothing herbal balm for hemorrhoids that moms-to-be swear by!

Our practitioners are available to reassure, support, and guide you through each trimester. In the last few weeks, we help you get in shape for labor, softening your pelvic muscles and ligaments and giving you an energy boost before the big day. Many obstetricians send patients to us for help in turning breech babies. (We use moxa, a technique that has been used this way for centuries but is now gaining increasing respect here in the west as research shows a 67% success rate. TAKING CARE OF YOURSELF WHILE YOU CARE FOR YOUR CHILD

I (Jill) remember well the first few months after my daughter was born — how elated I was, but also how exhausted. It was such a huge adjustment to go from being footloose and fancy free to being responsible for someone so vulnerable (who was, in addition, no help at all around the house, and a terrible conversationalist). Many mothers feel guilty about devoting time to their own well being, but from my own experience with my daughter and with my patients, I know self-care is absolutely vital. At the YinOva Center, we’re here to take care of you — so that you can take care of your child.

We aim to give moms support so they will have energy to do everything they need to do. We use nourishing herbs and supplements and acupuncture to get your body back on track after the demands of pregnancy and the even greater demands or raising a child. We provide gentle solutions for new moms’ most common complaints, including:

    • Anxiety
    • Back pain
    • Chapped nipples
    • Constipation
    • Fatigue
    • Hemorrhoids
    • Painful breasts
    • Poor milk supply
    • Post-partum depression

In addition, most of our practitioners are parents themselves, and offer a sympathetic ear and friendly advice in a warm and non-judgmental atmosphere.

  • Well Woman

    Well Woman

The YinOva Center is a natural home for women who are juggling complicated lives, trying to support not just their own health but also the health of their loved ones. This describes not just our patients, but also our practitioners! We have struggled with our weight, dealt with chronic illnesses and worried about our parenting — and our aging parents. That is, we understand your health journey because we are navigating our own. We are proud to say that at the YinOva Center we are never dogmatic or self-righteous about what we teach — we can’t be, because we know only too well that we have our own weaknesses. We are practicing Chinese medicine the way you have to use it: in real life.

The YinOva Center provides complementary care for a variety of health issues. We don’t see ourselves as “alternative” to conventional care, but rather as supplemental. We want to be a resource for you for good advice and gentle treatments that work alongside the care you receive from your medical doctor. We do practice preventative medicine, however, so many of our patients do end up seeing less of their doctors — because they need them less often.

Some of the most common complaints we address are:

    • Adjunctive cancer care (click here to read a blog article by one of our patients about healing from breast cancer and breast cancer treatments)
    • Allergies
    • Anxiety
    • Arthritis
    • Asthma
    • Back pain
    • Depression
    • Digestive problems
    • Eating disorders
    • Fatigue
    • Fibrocystic breasts
    • Headaches
    • Hormone imbalance
    • Low libido
    • Menstrual irregularities
    • Migraines
    • Musculoskeletal pain
    • Painful periods
    • PMS Stress
    • Thyroid dysfunction
    • Uterine fibroids

We love our job because we enjoy helping women be the healthiest they can be, supporting them through whatever health challenges they face, and standing by them as they make the choices necessary to heal themselves.

  • Prime Time

    Prime Time

Here’s a word that can really make you feel old (if you let it): peri-menopausal. And while it is true that our cycles do change as we move through our 40′s, nothing about that has to detract from how vibrant we feel or how active we are. At the Yinova Center we operate under the assumption that though we are all getting older, we do not have to be “Old.”

Our patients living their fifth decade have varied concerns, from parenting young adults to wanting to conceive, from transitioning to new careers to planning for retirement, from caring for aging parents to doing all they can to put off the time when they themselves will need such care. What they all have in common is working on getting and staying as healthy as they can be, in mind and body.

And that’s just the ticket to successfully managing this time in your life. When we were in our twenties we may have been able to get away with some things without notable consequences to our health, but by the time we reach our 40′s our bodies need a lot more support. The good news is: if we are good to them, they will be good to us.

This is particularly important in the run up to menopause. What you do now sets the stage for that major transition; taking action during peri-menopause can set you up for a trouble-free menopause. This is the best time to come in and let us help you deal with any niggling health problems. Your future self will thank you.

For women in menopause, Chinese medicine has some gentle solutions that help make this transition easier. We use herbs, acupuncture and nutritional supplements to treat menopausal symptoms.

For women in this phase of life, we often treat:

      • Anxiety
      • Fatigue
      • Heavy periods
      • Hot flashes
      • Night sweats
      • Irregular cycles
      • Irritability
      • Mood swings
      • Sleep disturbances
      • Stress
      • Weight gain

  • Living Strong

    Living Strong

HELPING MATURE WOMEN TO LIVE LIFE TO ITS FULLEST

In a culture obsessed by youth, aging can sometimes be seen as a failure. But our older patients tell a different story. They talk of feeling more settled and less self-conscious. They talk of a time when they are free from the day to day responsibility for their children and able to enjoy their grandchildren. They are women who have always maintained a level of fitness and are now reaping the benefits of that investment in their 60′s and 70′s. They are active and contributing to their families and society. They are showing the rest of us how it should be done!

Our job at the YinOva Center is to help women in this phase of life to continue to live strong. We encourage you to have regular check-ups and health screenings with your doctor so that you can catch health problems early and before they are too serious. But rely on us for adjunctive care for problems such as:

Aches and pains Adjunctive cancer care Arthritis Cardiovascular disorders Digestive disorders Fatigue Headaches Insomnia Urinary problems Stroke recovery (click here to read a blog entry by one of our patients about recovering from a stroke) Weak immunity
